To support educators and school leaders in understanding the components of effective foundational skills instruction and provide tools to successfully plan for and implement each piece.
As the authors of Puzzle Piece Phonics: Word Study for the Balanced Literacy Classroom, foundational skills instruction is the focus of our careers.
- Presenting: We attend and present at various regional and national literacy conferences throughout the year to help educators master research-based literacy practices.
- Consulting: We meet with teachers, literacy facilitators, and principals to establish well-rounded English Language Arts blocks in the primary grades with an emphasis on phonics.
- Publishing: We are continuing our work with Corwin Literacy to produce additional titles that support and empower educators in the primary grades.
Welcome! We're Elise Lund, Danielle James, and Carolyn Banuelos (in the order pictured). We met teaching first grade in Charlotte, North Carolina. Frustrated by the flaws in the phonics resources we used, we made it our mission to learn how students best acquire phonics knowledge and to overcome the challenge of teaching foundational skills to our diverse students. The result was Puzzle Piece Phonics: Word Study for the Balanced Literacy Classroom.
Puzzle Piece Phonics lit a fire in us! We became passionate about sharing our experience with other educators and empowering them to design and implement effective foundational skills lessons. We now act as presenters, coaches/consultants, and authors hoping to spread our love of word study and support teachers in the primary grades as they lay the foundation for reading and writing.
